I am so glad to have been brought up in the Brooklyn area. Our culture here in the "city" is so unique. No where else in the country can you find such a vibrant culture. One of my first clients was in Williamsburg, and he was in desperate need of personal training.
He was overweight, with serious knee problems due to carrying around that excess weight for so long. He worked in with computers, and did a lot of sitting. "Sitting is the New Smoking" is a phrase popularized by Crossfit icon Kelley Starrett, the founder of Mobility WOD. I would definitely agree with the dangers of prolonged sitting.

One of the major points that I really needed to hit home with my new client in Williamsburg, was that sitting is bad for him. He thought that sitting was relaxing, and would give his painful knees a break. So what really happens when you sit for long periods of time? Here are a couple negative effects of sitting to chew on:

A story of one of my most successful in home personal training clients
A Brooklyn man by the name of "John" was revitalized through my in home personal training in just 4 months. For the purpose of giving him privacy while I tell this amazing story - I'll refer to him as John. John, 31 years old came into his first session with no life, no energy and through his slow stride it seemed like walking itself was cumbersome. He had been overweight for a number of years, and I had almost, but given up on life.
John was referred to me by one of my previous clients Cindy who lose 15 pounds off her 5" 2' now 117 pound frame. Losing that much weight was a huge deal for her, because she was a realtor and needed to look her best. Cindy met John when he was trying to sell his house. She looked at his financial situation, and quickly noticed that he could easily keep the house.
For all those outside of Brooklyn, having a house here in BK is a huge deal. She felt he wasn't necessarily in a bad position that required selling it, but rather just down on life. Cindy told him about her weight loss experience with Joey and 1 on 1 Fitness and Wellness.

John came in for his first session walking slow, and looking lifeless. If you were in the room you'd think this man was 75 years old. As a matter of fact his functional age and body age were above 70. He spoke quietly, and so softly that it was difficult to hear. He said he was disgusted with looking at himself in the mirror every morning.
He said he was just 31, and already had a handful of prescription medications to take for his high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and irritable bowel syndrome. Throughout our first few sessions he opened up a little bit more. When he started losing weight it was almost like his personality changed.

A short 4 months later - it was John's last session with me. A new man had been born with the walk of a functioning human being. John's weight loss results were striking with over 30 pounds of fat lost. He also gained 6.5 pounds of muscle. He came into that last session with limitless energy, and spoke confidently.
I was in complete tears saying by to this man, but I realize now why I do what I do. Hopefully by reading this blog post you can understand why I fight so hard for what I stand for, and why I owe it to myself to raise my standard. There are more people just like John throughout Brooklyn, and I'm determined create more weight loss transformations with them.
Making up excuses is hard
Nothing could be more important than investing in your health. As a Personal Trainer I see people everyday throughout the Brooklyn area that invest time and energy in becoming less healthy. The fact of the matter is that it is equally as hard to be healthy as unhealthy.
Let me say that again - "It is equally as hard to be healthy as unhealthy".
It's very hard to keep coming up with excuse after excuse as to why you're overweight, dealing with knee & back pain, or your cholesterol is still high. Looking in the mirror, and feeling discouraged by the person staring back at you is hard.

Make the commitment to yourself to be healthy today. You'll find it to be difficult on your own. The best personal trainer in Brooklyn less than a click a way. Getting in shape, losing weight and feeling more confident in your own skin can be accomplished. Will making a change in your life be easy? No, but it doesn't need to be hard.
